Rath Yatra 2026: Massive Security Plan Activated As Puri Prepares For Lakhs Of Devotees
Puri: With the annual Rath Yatra drawing closer, Odisha has launched extensive security and crowd-management preparations to ensure the smooth conduct of one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. Lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad are expected to arrive in Puri for the grand festival dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
Authorities have intensified planning efforts weeks ahead of the event, focusing on crowd control, traffic management, surveillance systems and emergency response measures. Multiple review meetings involving Odisha Police, district administration officials, temple authorities and other stakeholders have already been held to finalize arrangements.
Large-Scale Security Deployment Planned
Security is expected to be tighter than ever as authorities prepare for the massive influx of pilgrims. Odisha Police has begun implementing a comprehensive security strategy covering the Jagannath Temple area, Grand Road (Bada Danda), parking zones, railway stations, bus stands and major entry points into Puri.
Officials have emphasized that maintaining public safety while ensuring a smooth pilgrimage experience remains the top priority. Special focus is being placed on preventing overcrowding and ensuring quick response capabilities during peak gathering periods.
72 Police Platoons For Key Rituals
As part of the preparations, authorities have already announced the deployment of 72 police platoons for Debasnan Purnima, one of the important rituals preceding Rath Yatra. The deployment is being viewed as an indication of the scale of security arrangements planned for the main festival.
Senior police officers are closely monitoring preparations and reviewing deployment plans to ensure effective crowd management during all major rituals associated with the festival.
Crowd Management Takes Centre Stage
Managing lakhs of devotees remains one of the biggest challenges during Rath Yatra. To address this, authorities are preparing detailed crowd-flow strategies, designated movement corridors and emergency evacuation plans.
Officials are also focusing on improving coordination between police personnel, temple servitors, emergency responders and district administration teams to avoid congestion at sensitive locations.
The administration aims to ensure that devotees can participate in the festival safely while minimizing crowd-related risks.
Traffic And Parking Arrangements Being Finalized
Traffic management is another major focus area ahead of Rath Yatra 2026. Large numbers of private vehicles, buses and tourist transport services are expected to enter Puri during the festival period.
Authorities are working on comprehensive traffic diversion plans, designated parking facilities and route management systems to reduce congestion. Additional personnel may be deployed at parking locations to facilitate smoother vehicle movement.
Detailed traffic advisories are expected to be issued closer to the festival.
LED Screens For Devotee Convenience
To reduce crowd pressure near key viewing points, authorities are planning to install large LED screens at multiple locations across Puri. These screens will allow devotees to witness important rituals and chariot movements even if they are unable to reach the most crowded areas.
The initiative is expected to improve crowd distribution while enhancing the overall pilgrim experience.
Monsoon Preparedness Also Under Review
With Rath Yatra taking place during the monsoon season, the Odisha government is also reviewing contingency plans for heavy rainfall and waterlogging.
Officials are assessing drainage systems, emergency response mechanisms and disaster-management protocols to ensure that adverse weather conditions do not disrupt festival arrangements.
The move comes as weather experts closely monitor monsoon progress across Odisha.
Behavioural Training For Police Personnel
Authorities are also focusing on the human side of festival management. Police personnel assigned to Rath Yatra duties are reportedly undergoing behavioural and public-interaction training to help them communicate effectively with devotees and assist pilgrims during the event.
The initiative aims to promote a more people-friendly approach to policing during one of Odisha’s most important religious festivals.
Preparations Gather Momentum
Alongside security planning, temple authorities and government agencies are continuing preparations for major rituals linked to Rath Yatra, including Snana Yatra, Gundicha Yatra, Bahuda Yatra and Suna Besha.
Regular review meetings are being conducted to ensure that all logistical, administrative and security arrangements remain on schedule.

Visitors planning to attend Rath Yatra 2026 should be prepared for:
- Enhanced security checks
- Traffic diversions in and around Puri
